KARACHI: According to a poll, about 70 percent Americans are against war in Afghanistan; they do not precisely understand the purpose behind this war. These views were expressed by an American Human Rights Activist, Joe Lombardo. He was speaking at a seminar entitled ‘Dr Aafia Siddiqui’ at the Department of International Relations, University of Karachi (KU). In a statement issued here on Wednesday, He said that US was militarily present in most parts of the world; the largest empire ever established in the world. People in the US invaded Afghanistan and Iraq. He said that there was no war between Pakistan and the US but Pakistan had been bombarded steadily. A large portion of US budget was being spent on military. There has been an environment of insecurity in the US after 9/11; Muslims were particular target of this environment of insecurity, he said. He said that American society was passing through a difficult economic phase. US rights activist Judy Bello said that people want to live with peace. She said that peace was a collective ideal. “Governments come and go but people are the strongest reality of the world,” she said. Bello is an active member of Fellowship of Reconciliation. She protested against American policies in Vietnam War and in Iraq. She said that there were great human values which had universal application. She was of the opinion that wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have had adverse impact of the peoples of these countries. staff report
